What is Lip Filler?

Lip filler is a medical aesthetic procedure applied for the purpose of increasing the volume of the lips, improving their shape, and removing the fine lines around them. Today, the most commonly used filler substance is hyaluronic acid; this substance, which is naturally found in the body, creates both a volume and fullness effect by attracting moisture to the skin. Hyaluronic acid-based lip filler preparations have solidified their place among the most preferred applications of the medical aesthetic field thanks to their safety profile and reversible structure.

Lip filler does not only mean enlarging the lips. This application can serve many aesthetic goals such as defining the lip borders, removing asymmetry, softening the fine vertical lines on the upper lip, and reshaping the smile line. Applied with the correct technique and the correct dose, lip filler reveals a natural and proportional result compatible with the person’s facial features. With aging, volume loss in the lips, blurring of the borders, and sagging in the surrounding tissues are observed. These changes can give the person a tired and pale appearance. Lip filler compensates for these losses and gives the face a younger and more vivid expression. In addition to this, it is a method frequently applied with aesthetic concerns in individuals who have a congenitally thin or asymmetrical lip structure.

How is Lip Filler Applied?

Lip filler application is a short-term procedure performed by an experienced physician and does not require hospital stay. Before the procedure, the physician evaluates the person’s lip structure, facial proportions, and aesthetic expectations in detail. This evaluation stage is of critical importance in terms of determining the amount of filler to be applied and the technique. Topical anesthetic cream is applied to the application area and waited for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Since many hyaluronic acid-based filler preparations also contain local anesthetic substances such as lidocaine, the sensation of discomfort during the procedure remains at a very limited level. After the anesthesia effect is established, the filler substance is injected in sensitive doses into predetermined points with the help of a fine-tipped needle or cannula. The entire procedure results within an average of 15 to 30 minutes. The effect starts to be seen immediately after the lip filler; however, due to the mild swelling in the first few days, the result may appear exaggerated. The real and final result generally clarifies within 1 to 2 weeks. For this reason, the evaluation made immediately after the application may be misleading; it is recommended to wait a few weeks for the control appointment.

What are the Types of Lip Filler?

Different techniques and different filler preparations can be used in lip filler application. Which method is to be preferred is determined according to the person’s lip structure, the desired result, and the physician’s clinical evaluation. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are accepted as the gold standard in lip filler applications. These preparations, which are compatible with the body, reversible, and offer long-term effects, are produced in different consistencies and densities; a finer consistency can be preferred for the lip border, and denser formulations can be preferred for the lip body. Calcium hydroxylapatite-based fillers, on the other hand, are an alternative that offers a longer-term effect but is more difficult to reverse; therefore, they are less preferred in the lip area compared to hyaluronic acid. When evaluated from a technical perspective, different injection methods such as linear threading, fan technique, and cross-hatching can be applied alone or in combination according to the physician’s experience and the targeted result. The use of a cannula is becoming an increasingly widespread choice because it creates less bruising and swelling compared to a needle.

To Whom is Lip Filler Applied?

Lip filler appeals to a wide patient base with different aesthetic concerns and needs. Individuals who can benefit from this application can generally be evaluated under the following groups: those experiencing loss of lip volume due to aging, those who have a congenitally thin or disproportionate lip structure, those who notice that their lip borders are becoming blurred, and those who complain about fine vertical lines around the upper lip are at the head of this group. In contrast, lip filler is not a suitable procedure for every individual. In people with active skin infection or cold sore problems, the application should be postponed until the recovery is completed. Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals, those with a known allergy to the filler substance, and patients with blood clotting disorders must definitely make a detailed evaluation with their physicians before having this application. Additionally, in people who have previously had permanent filler, the current filler status must be evaluated by the physician before hyaluronic acid-based lip filler is applied.

How Long is Lip Filler Effective?

The duration of the effect of lip filler varies depending on the formulation of the preparation used, the amount applied, the person’s metabolism speed, and lifestyle. Since hyaluronic acid-based fillers are broken down by enzymes in the body over time, they offer a temporary effect. Because the lip area is one of the most active areas of the face, the filler substance can be metabolized faster compared to other areas. For this reason, the effect of lip filler generally progresses between 6 to 12 months. In applications repeated at regular intervals, it is observed that the filler is preserved for a longer time and in some patients, the duration of effect exceeds 12 months. Smoking, intense sun exposure, and high metabolism speed are among the factors that can shorten the duration of effect.

Recovery Process After Lip Filler

The recovery process after lip filler generally progresses quickly; however, because the lip area is a sensitive area, it is necessary to be careful for the first few days. Immediately after the procedure, swelling, mild redness, and small bruises at the injection points can be seen on the lips. These symptoms disappear spontaneously mostly within 3 to 7 days. Pressure should not be applied to the lips, and the use of kisses and straws should be avoided for the first 24 hours. Intense exercise, sauna, alcohol consumption, and hot drinks should be postponed for the first 48 hours. Avoiding direct sun exposure and applying sunscreen to the lip area are among the recommended steps in this period. It is of great importance for individuals with a history of cold sores to share this situation with their physicians before the lip filler; prophylactic antiviral treatment may be required. In the control appointment to be made within 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure, the physician can evaluate the results and make corrective touches if necessary.

Things to Consider for a Natural Appearance After Lip Filler

One of the most frequently expressed concerns in lip filler is the anxiety of an artificial or exaggerated appearance. However, it is possible to obtain extremely natural results with the correct technique, correct dose, and correct physician selection. A gradual approach is the healthiest way in this regard; it is especially recommended for individuals who will have lip filler for the first time to start with a low dose and evaluate the result, then perform additional application if needed. Paying attention to facial proportions is also decisive for a natural result; the lip size being compatible with the nose, eyes, and chin structure provides an aesthetic integrity. Establishing open and clear communication with the physician and sharing expectations, reference visuals, and concerns is also an important step that increases satisfaction with the result.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Filler

1- Is lip filler a painful procedure?

Thanks to the topical anesthetic cream applied before lip filler and the lidocaine contained in many filler preparations, the sensation of discomfort during the procedure is largely minimized. Since the lip area is a sensitive area, a slight pressure and pinprick sensation may be experienced; however, this situation remains at a level that can be tolerated by most people.

2- Is lip filler reversible?

Hyaluronic acid-based lip filler can be completely dissolved when desired by the injection of an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This feature makes lip filler a reliable and preferred procedure as it offers the possibility of reversing the application when the result is not satisfactory or a complication develops.

3- Can makeup be applied after having lip filler?

It is recommended not to apply makeup products to the lip area for the first 24 hours after lip filler. Following this period, the normal makeup routine can be returned to; however, movements that apply pressure and friction to the lip area should be avoided for the first few days.

4- How often should lip filler be repeated?

The duration of the effect of lip filler varies between 6 to 12 months on average. When the effect of the filler starts to decrease or passes completely, the application can be repeated. It is observed in regularly followed patients that the filler is preserved for a longer time and over time a sufficient result can be obtained with a smaller amount of filler.

5- What is the difference between lip filler and lip botox?

While lip filler gives volume and shape to the lips with hyaluronic acid injection, lip botox is applied for the purpose of removing the fine lines around the lips and creating a fullness illusion by slightly turning the upper lip outwards. Although the two applications serve different goals, they are preferred as a complement to each other in many patients as a combination.
